Resources for sharing
Day 1 of Exchange Programme:
Japanese Etiquette by SJSS Students
22.01.2016
The purpose of the sharing is to enable students of the Singapore Japanese Secondary School (SJSS) students to use English Language to communicate with students of Raffles Institution (RI), after they get to know one another after an ice-breaking game.
During the sharing of Japanese culture and etiquette by SJSS students, RI students asked questions after each SJSS group's presentation. SJSS students also get to learn more about Singapore's cultures in the topics presented when RI students discussed the similarities and differences between Singapore and Japanese cultures.
SJSS students were motivated to use English Language to comunicate and some RI students who learn Japanese as a Third Language also had the opportunity to practise conversing in Japanese.

A world-acclaimed Japanese movie 'Okuribito' (Departures) won the Oscar Best Foreign Language Film (2009) and the Japan Academy Prize (日本アカデミー賞, Nippon Akademī-shō ) for Picture of the Year (2009). The movie theme revolves around treasuring our loved ones and ourselves, through a moving story of a musician-turned-nokanshi (encoffining master - a professional who cleanses and clothes a body). Through this movie, one learns more of Japanese culture of respectiving one's ancestors, a suitable link to the sharing of 'visiting graveyards' by SJSS Students.
Day 2 of Exchange Programme:
Science Workshop by RI Students
25.02.2016
SJSS Students will visit 5 Science Learnng Stations when they visit Raffles Institution on this second day of RI-SJSS Collaboration Project on Science & Cultural Exchange.
The experiments are all based on common Science topics in SJSS and RI Science curricula like cells, diffusion, osmosis and aqueous solutions.
The event is an opportunity for RI's Year 2 (Grade 8) and Year 3 (Grade 9) students to showcase several interesting science experiments. They will practise presenting scientific content to non-native English Language speakers from SJSS and sharing science experiments with the new friends they have made on Day 1 of the Exchange Programme.
This event will be a good platform for students of both schools to foster mutual appreciation for each other’s culture as well as forging a common interest in Science, which may open doors to future science research work collaboration between both schools and beyond.
RI Students who learnt Japanese as a Third Language also has the opportunity to translate part of their presentations into Japanese Language to enable better sharing of scientific terminologies with their Japanese friends.
The presentation slides were written in a mixture of both English & Japanese, with translated scientific terms!
